Objective
The objective in a wrestling match is to beat my your opponent by a pin, technical fall, major decision, or decision. During a match, there are three, two-minute long periods.
Ways to win a match
- Pin ( Fall )
- What it is: Holding your opponent’s shoulders flat on the mat for 1 second
- Result: Instant win – match ends immediately
- Team points: 6
- Technical Fall
- What it is: Scoring 15 points more than your opponent at any time during the match
- Results: Match ends immediately once the 15-point lead is reached
- Team Points: 5
- Major Decision
- What it is: Winning by 8 to 14 points at the end of the match
- Results: You win at the end of the third period
- Team points: 4
- Decision
- What it is: Winning by 1 to 7 points at the end of the match
- Results: You win at the end of the third period
- Team points: 3
Ways to score points
- Takedown – 3 points
- What it is: bringing your opponent down to the mat from a standing position and gaining control
- Escape – 1 point
- What it is: escaping from the bottom position and returning to a neutral ( standing ) position
- Reversal – 2 points
- What it is: Going from the bottom position to the top position while maintaining control
- Near Fall ( Back points ) – 2, 3 or 4 points
- What it is: Holding your opponent’s back at an angle less than 90 degrees to the mat ( but not pinned )
- How it is scored: 2 pts for holding them for 2 seconds, 3 pts for holding them for 3 seconds, 4 pts for holding them 4+ seconds
- Penalty Points – 1 point
- What it is: Given for illegal moves, stalling, unsportsmanlike conduct, or improper moves ( i.e. locked hands )
- Examples:
- Stalling ( no activity or avoiding action )
- Illegal moves ( i.e. Full nelsons or slams )
- Technical violations ( i.e. false starts or fleeing the mat )
- Unsportsmanlike conduct
